Plans & Goals
When I began pursuing my degree in History at Georgia Southern, my biggest concern was turning my love for history into something that I could not only make a living doing, but also enjoy. It is not always easy to make a clear career connection with a degree in Arts and Humanities. Sure, I could always be a teacher, or maybe even work in a museum, but neither of those professions quite fit into what I want in life.
Academically, there are a few goals and plans that are very important to me. To begin, I have plans to participate in a study abroad going to Italy this summer. Visiting Italy has always been a dream of mine. I am excited that I’m afforded an opportunity to go and not only learn, but to also immerse myself in the history and rich culture the country has to offer. Another note worthy aspiration I intend to reach while in college is to become fluent in Spanish. Eventually, I would like to also learn French and Italian. Later I will discuss how learning these languages will help me pursue my professional goals. Upon finishing school, I plan to have an in-depth grasp of my discipline and graduate summa cum laude. Doing my absolute best in school has always been very important to me.
Professionally, I would like to combine my love of history and what I’ve learned through my studies to start my own tour guide company. I will begin with groups of about five to ten people, whom I will accompany to different countries all over the world. Not only will these tours include ventures such as hiking, whitewater rafting, sightseeing, zip-lining, and other fun activities, I also want to include portions where I teach people about the culture and history of each place. A degree in history will truly help me to pinpoint the areas I would like to target with these trips. Some places I already have in mind include England, China, Spain, France, Mexico, Italy, Greece, Costa Rica, Japan, and Thailand. I have chosen these places because the diverse histories of each has piqued my interest since I was a young girl. I’m sure as time goes on, and I travel a bit more, many more countries will be added to the list.
In order to be successful in this venture, I plan to travel around for about a year after graduation and diligently journal and record all of my experiences along the way. These travels, with a little extra research, will allow me to formulate a plan for my first journey. I feel that it will be best to start with small groups, and focus on one country at a time until I have perfected a trip for each one. I believe becoming fluent in Spanish, French, and Italian will greater assist me in leading these trips, and will also bring a level of comfort to the people who book my tours.
